Common Name(s): Fraser fir
Scientific Name: Abies fraseri
Distribution: Southeastern United States (Appalachian mountains); widely cultivated in the United States and Europe
Comments: Named after John Fraser, a botanist who made collections in the Appalachian region in the late 1700s. The tree is sometimes suggested to merely be a subspecies of the closely related balsam fir (Abies balsamea)—though it is generally accepted as a distinct species.
Although Fraser fir is widely planted and grown for harvest as Christmas trees, the species is considered endangered (according to the IUCN Redlist) in its natural range within the Appalachian mountains.
